ABOUT US
Our Beginnings
The First Baptist Church of Willimantic was officially organized in 1827. Our current building was built in 1858 and enlarged in 1889. In 1968 The First Baptist Church of Willimantic had an opportunity to sell its building after the Valentine's Day Fire destroyed the 1865 Union Block.
The declining church voted not to sell, and to remain a downtown church, which is where it still stands. In 2002 the First Baptist  voted not to close its doors and instead chose to celebrate its 175th anniversary.

A New Day
In 2003 the First Baptist Church of Willimantic voted to call the Reverend Dr. Fred Shapiro as its new pastor and is now operating as "A New Church for a New Day".

Who We Are

Blending Traditional and Transformational Worship, the First Baptist Church of Willimantic is a caring Christian community located on Main Street by history and by choice. We invite all people without distinction that together we might live our lives by this three-fold calling:
  • Love God and One another
  • Discover God's unique call and purpose for our individual lives
  • Participate in transforming Willimantic into a safe, healthy and inspiring community
